City's five-largest law firms expect to add more lawyers to ranks

Pittsburgh's five-largest law firms said they expect to hire more lawyers this year, and at least two said the increases will be major.

Not surprisingly, the biggest jump will be at the city's largest firm, Kirkpatrick & Lockhart, Nicholson Graham LLP.

"We have approximately 30 first-year lawyers starting in September, one of our largest classes of new lawyers ever," said Peter Kalis, chairman of KLNG's management committee.

Thomas VanKirk, CEO, Buchanan Ingersoll PC, said he anticipated record hiring, both from newly minted lawyers and lateral hires, but couldn't yet divulge numbers.

"We expect to hire more than we have in the past three years," he said.

Gregory Jordan, managing partner, Reed Smith LLP, plans to add 15 to 20 lawyers here, on par with 2004.

"The market is extremely busy in Pittsburgh and elsewhere," she said, "but it's picked up substantially in Pittsburgh compared to last year." - Lori Carpenter
