Position Summary:
The Senior Counsel will serve as a key member of a lean and highly collaborative legal team, working closely with the General Counsel and business stakeholders across the organization. This role offers a high degree of autonomy and responsibility, with a primary focus on commercial leasing transactions as well as involvement in acquisitions, dispositions, financings, and other strategic initiatives. The position is ideal for a commercially minded attorney who is comfortable operating independently, enjoys direct interaction with business partners, and is motivated by a dynamic environment where initiative, a team-first attitude, and sound judgment are valued.
Core Responsibilities:
- Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of commercial retail leases and related agreements, including amendments, renewals, extensions, etc. with current/proposed tenants and/or their legal counsel.
- Serve as a trusted advisor providing practical, business-oriented legal guidance.
- Manage and collaborate closely with paralegals to ensure efficient execution of leasing activity.
- Assist General Counsel in the general legal affairs of the Company, including financings, acquisitions/dispositions and oversight of litigation matters.
- Contribute to special projects on an as-needed basis.
- Engage regularly with cross-functional teams, interacting daily with all departments at ECHO.
Qualifications:
- J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to practice in Pennsylvania.
- Minimum of 4 years of real estate legal experience, gained in a law firm or in-house environment.
- Strong background in commercial real estate, including leasing, acquisitions and dispositions.
- General understanding of real estate title matters including review of title commitments and resolution of routine title issues (excluding zoning matters).
- Familiarity with reviewing and drafting leasing documentation.
- Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving, time management, and customer services skills, with a practical and business-oriented approach.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Office, with an emphasis on Outlook, Word, Excel. Knowledge of MRI (or comparable accounting software such as Yardi) is a plus.
Beneficial Experience (a plus but not required):
- Exposure to corporate transactional or tax matters
- Familiarity with commercial real estate disputes or litigation concepts
- Experience working with retail portfolios or shopping center assets
