Job Description:

ATI Inc., one of the largest and most diversified specialty materials and components producers in the world, has retained us to recruit an Assistant General Counsel, Labor and Employment to join its legal team. This role reports directly to the Senior Vice President, General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer and is ideal for a seasoned attorney with 12+ years of experience in labor relations, employment law, compliance, and litigation.

This role serves as a strategic advisor to senior leadership guiding labor relations strategy, collective bargaining, employment law compliance, ethics investigations, and litigation management. It requires deep experience supporting global operations and leading strategic workforce initiatives in unionized environments. The Assistant General Counsel will play a key role in shaping ATI’s labor strategy and advancing its commitment to operational excellence and growth. 

Location: Onsite in Pittsburgh, PA, Milwaukee, WI, or Dallas, TX (HQ)

Key Responsibilities:

Labor Relations & Employment Law
  • Serve as lead employment and labor counsel for a global manufacturer with nearly 8,000 employees
  • Partner closely with Human Resources teams and business leaders across the company to offer practical guidance on workplace matters.
  • Advise on workforce-related aspects of acquisitions, consolidations, reorganizations, divestitures, and plant closures
  • Advise on union negotiations, collective bargaining, and grievances and represent the company (first chair) in union negotiations
  • Represent the company in labor arbitrations and proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)
  • Provide legal counsel on hiring, discipline, and discharge matters
  • Assist with severance agreements, vendor/service contracts tied to HR or benefits functions, and other applicable contracts/agreements
  • Counsel on workers’ compensation, leave programs, and accommodations.
Compliance & Ethics  
  • Oversee ethics compliance programs, including training and investigations
  • Lead a team responsible for monitoring, investigating, and responding to ethics hotline reports across all operations
  • Draft legal updates and develop compliance training programs covering ADA, FMLA, ADEA, Title VII, OFCCP, and FLSA
  • Manage internal audits, including wage and hour and I-9 compliance
  • Track legal and regulatory changes in employment and labor laws and regulations
  • Draft and/or review personnel policies and employee handbooks
Litigation Management
  • Lead the company’s response to administrative proceedings and employment litigation
  • Manage complex litigation matters
Internal Investigations and Reporting
  • Direct or collaborate on internal investigations related to alleged misconduct, violations of policy, or regulatory non-compliance.
  • Ensure timely reporting to senior management and external authorities, as needed.
Experience
 
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • 12+ law firm and/or in-house experience (preference for some law firm experience)
Required Skills:
 
  • Mentally agile with the ability to manage tight deadlines and shifting priorities, especially in fast-paced labor negotiations and employment matters
  • High emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills, essential for navigating sensitive union relationships, employee concerns, and executive-level discussions
  • Credibility and influence across all levels of the organization, including union representatives, HR leadership, and senior management
  • Experience in a public manufacturing or industrial company preferred, with direct exposure to unionized environments and collective bargaining
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking, with the ability to independently assess legal risks and offer practical, business-aligned solutions
  • Proven ability to manage multiple complex projects, including labor contracts, employment litigation, compliance investigations, and workforce initiatives
  • Initiative and judgment to proactively address labor and employment challenges, offering innovative solutions that align with ATI’s strategic goals
Travel:
 
  • Travel up to 25%
