Senior Counsel, Labor and Employment for

This role provides legal leadership across employment law, workforce compliance, and employee and labor relations in a complex, unionized manufacturing environment and serves as a trusted legal advisor to Human Resources, Operations, and senior business leaders, supporting both union and non-union employment matters, managing litigation risk, advising on workplace investigations, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws. This position requires independent judgment, strong cross-functional influence, and the ability to manage high-risk labor and employment matters, while operating below the enterprise-wide policy-setting authority of an Assistant General Counsel.

Key Responsibilities:
Employment Law & Employee Relations
- Provide legal guidance on discipline, performance management, terminations, and investigations
- Advise on discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wage & hour, and workplace conduct issues
- Counsel HR on ADA accommodations, FMLA/leave laws, pregnancy accommodations, and disability matters
- Support compliance with Title VII, ADEA, FLSA, ADA, OFCCP, and state employment laws
- Review severance agreements, employment contracts, restrictive covenants, and executive employment matters
Compliance, Policy & Risk Management
- Monitor changes in employment and labor law and assess impact on company policy and practices
- Draft, review, and update employee handbooks, workplace policies, and labor-related procedures
- Support wage & hour audits, I-9 compliance, immigration/work authorization issues, and regulatory reporting
- Partner with HR to develop training on investigations, labor relations, and employment law compliance
- Conduct legal risk assessments related to restructuring, RIFs, and workforce actions
- Oversee development and distribution of the annual Code of Conduct and related ethics and compliance policies.
- Manage the ethics hotline, including the preparation of regular reports for senior leadership and the Board regarding ethics and compliance activities.
Litigation, Investigations & Dispute Resolution
- Manage employment-related litigation and agency matters, including oversight of outside counsel
- Lead or support internal investigations related to misconduct, retaliation, and policy violations
- Develop case strategy, risk assessments, and settlement recommendations
- Prepare leadership briefings on legal exposure and mitigation strategies
Labor Relations & Collective Bargaining
- Support the Associate General Counsel in labor relations, collective bargaining, and union contract interpretation
- Support and participate in union negotiations, grievance resolution, arbitrations, and labor dispute strategy
- Provide guidance, under the direction of senior legal leadership, on labor contract compliance, discipline, grievances, and workplace conduct
- Partner with HR and Operations on union engagement strategies, workforce planning, and labor risk mitigation, with an emphasis on learning and gaining experience in this area
- Assist with matters involving the NLRB, labor arbitrations, and agency
proceedings
Leadership & Stakeholder Partnership
- Serve as a trusted advisor to HR, Operations, and executive leadership
- Influence cross-functional partners to align legal guidance with business priorities
- Mentor junior legal team members and support broader legal initiatives
- Deliver training to leaders on employment law, labor strategy, and employee relations best practices
Education/Admissions:
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- Active law license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
Experience:
- 7-15 years of labor and employment law experience
- In-house required, with preference for combination of law firm and in-house experience
- Experience supporting unionized and/or manufacturing environments preferred
- Experience handling employment litigation and regulatory compliance
- Proven ability to operate independently on complex matters and advise senior stakeholders
