Job Description:

We have been retained to recruit a Senior Legal Counsel, Global Trade Compliance for a global software and services company.

Location: The role will be Remote from any location within the continental United States or located at the company's HQ in the Greater Pittsburgh Region.

Overview: Our client is seeking a highly motivated Senior Legal Counsel, Global Trade Compliance to join their trade compliance team. As Senior Legal Counsel, you will report to the Assistant General Counsel, Global Trade Compliance and will be responsible for providing cross-functional expertise within a complex organization. You will work closely with multiple business teams to ensure that the trade compliance team is able deliver insightful and effective operational guidance and process improvements to our internal customers. Your role will also involve management of aerospace & defense-related trade compliance matters, ensuring compliance with complex regulatory requirements, and building efficient and scalable trade compliance processes.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a strategic advisor on complex trade compliance matters for global cross-functional teams across the organization 
  • Represent the trade compliance team in ensuring compliance with laws and regulations related to sensitive aerospace & defense applications
  • Manage all corporate export licensing requirements and compliance with license conditions 
  • Support customer due diligence processes to help ensure compliance with global trade regulations, particularly with respect to end-uses in China
  • Utilize extensive knowledge of global trade requirements to educate business partners on global trade standards, with a particular focus on providing guidance related to the handling of controlled software, technology, and services 
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive trade compliance recordkeeping system in accordance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices 
  • Assist with driving internal process improvement initiatives to respond and adapt to regulatory and business changes
  • Proactively develop tools and guidance for internal teams to promote standardization and consistency of awareness and handling of information 
  • Optimize existing trade compliance processes using continuous improvement methods
  • Complete other duties as assigned
Minimum Education/Certification Requirements and Experience:
  • Law degree from an accredited law school required
  • Member in good standing of at least one state bar association 
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in trade compliance with some experience in the aerospace & defense industry
  • Strong knowledge of trade compliance laws and regulations, including but not limited to EAR, ITAR and OFAC regulations
  • Demonstrated success leading and executing both short- and long-term projects 
  • Ability to identify opportunities for improvement and proactively devise practical solutions
  • Significant experience supporting and collaborating with cross-functional teams in a global organization
  • Ability to distill complex concepts into simple terms to teach others at varying levels of expertise
  • Comfortable providing input and advice on complex issues and providing direction to junior members of the team 
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
  • Strong communication skills with both legal and non-legal professionals.  Able to be diplomatic, tactful, and understand different perspectives  
  • Flexible and adaptable with a strong understanding of how to balance multiple priorities simultaneously 
  • Comfortable making risk-based decisions in ambiguous situations
  • Thrives in a team-oriented and collaborative environment 
  • Experience working remotely or with a widely distributed workforce
  • Experience with CRM tools and other trade automation tools
  • Sense of urgency
