Going virtual: Some modern-day lawyers forgo the traditional trappings of elegant offices to work remotely

John Monocello worked for one of Pittsburgh’s largest law firms, Cohen & Grigsby PC, then was director of intellectual property at local tech company BodyMedia. But for the past 11 years, he’s combined what appealed to him most at both former posts, all while occasionally working out of his pickup truck.

Monocello is a partner and patent strategy specialist at GTC Law Group, a virtual law firm. He does business from the firm’s shared space in the Strip District, but is just as likely to work on site with clients like Oakland-based Discovery Robotics Corp. He’s even pulled his dark green Toyota Tacoma on to the side of the road and grabbed his laptop, noting, “there’s a cab in back to keep my fishing gear dry.”
 

“We’ve had numerous calls, some from international firms, that have been looking at the Pittsburgh market, and it started four or five years ago,” Carpenter said. “The change is that more firms are open to lawyers working virtually from other locations than they were in the past. They’re starting to think outside the box.”
