2010: Pittsburgh executives offer an inside look at their investment moves

Bonds were part of the story for investing in 2010, but the consistent theme among local money managers was fine-tuning rather than drastic changes to produce impressive results.

For example, Lori Carpenter, president of Carpenter Legal Search, a Downtown-based recruitment firm, rebalanced her portfolio and saw her investments rise 15 percent by year end.

“I did not make major changes to my portfolio,” she said. “I continued to follow the financial plan that has been established by my adviser, Jim Rimmel from UBS Financial Services.”

Carpenter, who has worked with Rimmel for seven years, said she was “comfortable” with the plan and the allocations.

“The changes in 2010 included adding or increasing international bonds, real estate and commodities,” she said. “We have recently added more technology to the portfolio.”

Portfolio tweaking, rather than major overhauls, were a favored move by many financial professionals in 2010.
